Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack requires a purchased license

Many members of the campus community use Oracle’s VM VirtualBox to create multiple virtual machines on a single computer. It is not always clear that installing or upgrading to the Extension Pack is not part of Oracle’s free offering. To clarify:
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox Base Pack is an open source and free product under GNU General Public License, version 2
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack is an Oracle proprietary product available under PUEL License.
If you are currently running VirtualBox or if you download it in the future, be aware that use of the Extension Pack will require your department to purchase a license.
  • If the Base Pack meets your needs, it is the free choice.
  • If you use the Extension Pack for educational purposes (teaching and learning), you may qualify for an exception to paid licensing.
See more information on determining whether you have an extension pack installed, including how to delete it if you decide to do that. Please email amacdougall@newhaven.edu  with questions about using Oracle’s VM VirtualBox on campus.
